Printer privacy policy.
This notice covers the Printer mobile app by SOME GOOD NEWS LTD.
01 Who we are
Printer (the “App”) is provided by SOME GOOD NEWS LTD, a company registered in England and Wales, with its registered office at 128 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX, United Kingdom (“we”, “us”, “our”).
We are the data controller for the personal data described in this Privacy Policy.
Contact for privacy matters: service@somegoodnews.tech
Postal address: 128 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX, United Kingdom
This policy is published at: https://somegoodnews.tech/privacy-printer
We have not appointed a Data Protection Officer, as we are not required to do so under the UK GDPR.
02 The short version
We have tried to keep this policy honest and specific rather than exhaustive. In summary:
- The App has no user accounts and we operate no servers. We never learn your name, email address or postal address.
- We cannot see what you print. Print jobs travel directly from your device to your printer over your own local network. The content of your documents and photos never reaches us.
- We collect anonymous usage events and crash reports through Google Firebase, so we can see which features are used and which parts of the App are breaking.
- If you turn on notifications, we generate a random identifier so we can send you messages. It is not linked to your identity.
- If you buy a subscription, purchase is handled by Google Play. We never see your card or payment details.
- If you connect Google Drive or Dropbox, that is a separate, optional permission you grant yourself. Your files and your access tokens stay on your device. We never receive them.
03 Scope
This Privacy Policy applies to the Printer mobile application and to the website at somegoodnews.tech. It does not apply to the practices of Google, Dropbox, your printer manufacturer, or any other third party whose services you choose to use alongside the App.
04 What we collect
We do not ask you for any personal information, and there is nothing to fill in. The data below is generated automatically by your device as you use the App.
4.1 Usage and analytics data
Collected through Google Firebase Analytics:
- events describing your interaction with the App, such as screens opened, features used, and print actions started or completed;
- an automatically generated Firebase app instance identifier;
- device model, manufacturer, operating system version, App version, language and country;
- an approximate location (country or region level) derived from your IP address by Google. We do not collect precise or GPS location;
- the Android Advertising ID may be collected by the Firebase SDK. See Section 4.5.
4.2 Crash and diagnostic data
Collected through Google Firebase Crashlytics when the App stops unexpectedly:
- the technical fault and the component of the App in which it occurred, including stack traces;
- device model and operating system version;
- App version and state at the time of the crash;
- a Crashlytics installation identifier.
Crash reports are technical in nature. They are not designed to capture, and we do not use them to capture, the content of your documents.
4.3 Notification data
If, and only if, you grant notification permission, we use OneSignal to deliver messages. For this we process:
- a push subscription token issued by Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging;
- a randomly generated identifier that we create to distinguish one installation from another;
- device type, operating system version and language;
- delivery information, such as whether a notification was received or opened.
This random identifier is not derived from your name, email address, phone number, or any account. We cannot use it to identify you personally.
Notifications may be service-related (for example, information about your subscription or a change to the App) or promotional (for example, features and offers). You can withdraw consent at any time — see Section 8.
4.4 Subscription and purchase data
Subscriptions are sold and processed by Google Play. We use RevenueCat to determine what you are entitled to use. For this we process:
- an application user identifier that we generate for your installation;
- the subscription status, product purchased, purchase and renewal dates, trial and cancellation status, store country and currency, as reported by Google Play.
We do not collect, receive, process or store payment card numbers, bank details or billing addresses. These are handled entirely by Google under Google’s own terms and privacy policy. We do not pass your email address or any profile information to RevenueCat.
4.5 Advertising identifier
The App declares the AD_ID permission because the Firebase Analytics SDK may access the Android Advertising ID as part of its standard operation.
We do not access the Advertising ID ourselves, we do not use it to build advertising profiles, and we do not run advertising inside the App. You can reset or delete your Advertising ID and switch off ad personalisation at any time in your device settings, under Settings → Google → Ads.
4.6 Support correspondence
If you email us, we process your email address and whatever you choose to include in your message, for as long as it takes to resolve your enquiry.
05 What we do not collect
For the avoidance of doubt:
- We do not receive the content of anything you print. Print jobs are sent from your device directly to your printer across your local network.
- We do not collect your name, email address, postal address or telephone number, other than in support correspondence you initiate.
- We do not collect precise or GPS location.
- We do not collect contacts, photos, camera, microphone or SMS data beyond files you deliberately select for printing.
- We do not collect payment details.
- We do not operate servers that store your personal data. The data described in Section 4 is held by the third-party processors named in Section 7, on their infrastructure.
06 Why we process it, and on what legal basis
| Purpose | Data | Legal basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|---|
| Delivering the printing functionality of the App | Device and network data processed locally | Performance of a contract, Art. 6(1)(b) |
| Verifying your subscription and unlocking paid features | Section 4.4 | Performance of a contract, Art. 6(1)(b) |
| Understanding how the App is used, so that we can improve it | Section 4.1 | Consent, Art. 6(1)(a) |
| Detecting, diagnosing and fixing faults and crashes | Section 4.2 | Consent, Art. 6(1)(a), and our legitimate interest in a stable and secure App, Art. 6(1)(f) |
| Sending you service-related notifications | Section 4.3 | Consent, Art. 6(1)(a) |
| Sending you promotional notifications | Section 4.3 | Consent, Art. 6(1)(a) |
| Letting you select files from Google Drive or Dropbox | Section 9 | Consent, Art. 6(1)(a) |
| Responding to your support enquiries | Section 4.6 | Our legitimate interest in answering people who contact us, Art. 6(1)(f) |
| Complying with our legal, tax and accounting obligations | Subscription records | Legal obligation, Art. 6(1)(c) |
Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out beforehand.
08 Consent and how to withdraw it
Notifications. Withdraw consent by turning off notifications in your device settings, or in the App under Settings → Notifications. You can also switch off promotional notifications while keeping service-related ones.
Cloud storage connections. Disconnect at any time in the App. You can additionally revoke our access from your Google Account security settings (myaccount.google.com/permissions) or your Dropbox connected apps page (dropbox.com/account/connected_apps).
Advertising identifier. Reset or delete it in your device settings, as described in Section 4.5.
09 Google Drive and Dropbox connections
The App can connect to your Google Drive or Dropbox so that you can choose a file to print. These connections are entirely optional and are never enabled by default. We ask for your permission separately, at the moment you first use the feature.
Permissions we request:
- Google Drive: the
drive.filescope only. This gives the App access solely to the individual files you specifically select through the file picker. It does not give us the ability to browse, list or read the rest of your Drive. - Dropbox: read-only scopes —
account_info.read,files.metadata.readandfiles.content.read— used to display your files so that you can pick one and to retrieve the file you choose.
How the data is handled:
- The file you select is retrieved directly by the App on your device and sent to your printer. It is not uploaded to us, and we operate no servers that could receive it.
- We do not receive, store or have access to your file contents, your file names, your folder structure or your account information.
- Google Drive access tokens are held in memory only and are discarded when the session ends. Dropbox access tokens are stored encrypted on your device and never leave it.
- No token, file, or item of metadata is transmitted to us or to any third party.
Google API Services Limited Use disclosure
Printer’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Specifically, we do not use Google user data for serving advertisements, we do not transfer it to others except as necessary to provide or improve the feature you requested or as required by law, we do not allow humans to read it unless we have your affirmative consent, it is necessary for security purposes or to comply with applicable law, or the data is aggregated and anonymised.
10 International transfers
We are established in the United Kingdom. Some of our processors are located in the United States, as set out in Section 7.
Where personal data is transferred outside the United Kingdom, we rely on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, or on the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the recipient is certified under it. Copies of the relevant safeguards are available on request.
11 How long we keep data
We keep personal data only for as long as we need it for the purposes described in this policy. We do not store it on our own servers — it is held by the providers listed in Section 7 and deleted on the following basis:
- Analytics data: retained for up to 14 months after your last use of the App, then deleted automatically by Google.
- Crash reports: 90 days.
- Push notification identifiers: until you turn off notifications or uninstall the App. Records that stay inactive are purged after 18 months.
- Subscription records: for as long as your subscription is active, and for a limited period afterwards so that we can restore your purchase if you reinstall or a payment is disputed. Financial records of the transaction are held by Google and kept for 6 years to meet UK tax and accounting requirements.
- Support emails: deleted once your enquiry is resolved, or earlier if you ask.
- Aggregated statistics that cannot be linked to any device are not personal data, and we may keep them indefinitely.
You can ask us to delete your data at any time — see Section 13. Uninstalling the App stops all further collection immediately, though records already held will expire on the schedule above unless you ask us to remove them sooner.
12 Security
The App communicates with your printer over your own local network and with our processors over encrypted connections (TLS). Dropbox access tokens are stored in encrypted storage on your device. We limit the number of people with access to the analytics and subscription dashboards, and those accounts are protected by two-factor authentication.
No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a personal data breach occurs that is likely to result in a risk to your rights and freedoms, we will notify the Information Commissioner’s Office within 72 hours, and will notify you directly where the law requires it.
13 Your rights
Under the UK GDPR you have the right to request access to your personal data, correction of inaccurate data, deletion, restriction of processing, portability, and to object to processing based on our legitimate interests. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time.
A practical note on identification. Because the App has no accounts, the data we hold is tied to randomly generated identifiers rather than to you personally. Under Article 11 of the UK GDPR we are not required to obtain additional information purely in order to identify you. To exercise your rights in respect of analytics or notification data, you will need to supply us with the relevant identifier, which you can find in the App under Settings → Privacy → My identifiers. Without it, we may be unable to locate your data.
We will respond within one month. There is no charge, unless a request is manifestly unfounded or excessive.
Deleting your data. You can request deletion by emailing us. Uninstalling the App stops all further collection. Note that we cannot delete your Google Play purchase history, which is held by Google under its own policy.
Complaints. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you may complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk, or by calling 0303 123 1113. We would appreciate the chance to address your concerns first.
14 United States residents
Depending on your state of residence, you may have the right to know what personal data we process, to access and obtain a copy of it, to correct it, to delete it, and to opt out of its processing for targeted advertising, sale, or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects. You may exercise these rights using the contact details in Section 1, and we will not discriminate against you for doing so.
We do not sell personal data for monetary consideration, and we do not use personal data for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not knowingly process sensitive personal information as that term is defined under state privacy laws.
If we decline your request, you may appeal that decision by replying to our response or writing to us at the address in Section 1. We will inform you in writing of the outcome within 45 days. If your appeal is denied, you may contact your state Attorney General.
We honour opt-out preference signals, including Global Privacy Control, where they are transmitted to our website.
15 Australian residents
We handle personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
You may request access to, or correction of, your personal information using the contact details in Section 1. As set out in Section 10, some of your information is disclosed to overseas recipients located in the United States and Ireland. If you are dissatisfied with our response to a privacy complaint, you may refer the matter to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
16 Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the App develops. The date at the top shows when the current version took effect. Where a change materially affects how we use your data, we will tell you in the App before it takes effect, and where the change requires it we will ask for your consent again.
